A Simpler, Smarter Checkout for 300 000 Merchants
PrestaShop Checkout is one of the most widely used payment solutions in the PrestaShop ecosystem. It brings together everything merchants need to accept payments online, from PayPal and credit cards to Apple Pay, Bancontact, iDeal, and other local methods, in one easy-to-use module.
We recently introduced a new architecture that separates the module’s business logic from PrestaShop’s core logic. The new architecture makes the module more scalable, easier to maintain, and better prepared for future growth.
The Challenge
The original version of PrestaShop Checkout had become increasingly difficult to maintain and included outdated logic that limited its flexibility. To support faster development and long-term stability, we needed to simplify the codebase, remove deprecated functionality, and create a more scalable foundation.
One key challenge was delivering all of these improvements seamlessly to thousands of merchants through a single update without requiring manual reinstallation or reconfiguration.

What We Did
We refactored the module’s backend architecture and modernized its structure. Key improvements included:
- A complete backend code refactor for better speed and reliability
- Compatibility with PrestaShop versions 1.7, 8, and 9
- Easier maintenance and long-term stability for both merchants and developers
Key Features
- Accept major cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and PayPal
- Support for local methods like iDeal, Bancontact, Apple Pay, BLIK, and more
- Offer 3x and 4x installment payments (in supported countries)
- Express Checkout buttons to reduce steps and speed up purchasing
The Result
- A much smoother, faster checkout experience
- More flexibility to grow internationally and add new payment methods
- Already in use by thousands of merchants across 190+ countries
- Drives up to 70% of total merchant revenue in the PrestaShop ecosystem (internal estimate)
An Effective Partnership for an Ambitious Project: PrestaShop Checkout V5
“I had the pleasure of working closely with Invertus on the redevelopment of the PrestaShop Checkout V5 module. This project came with ambitious goals and extremely tight deadlines.
Invertus’ greatest strengths truly stood out during this collaboration—their deep expertise in the PrestaShop ecosystem and their impressive reactivity enabled us to move forward quickly and efficiently at every stage of development. Their ability to understand our needs and provide tailored solutions made all the difference.
I also had the opportunity to visit the Invertus team in Lithuania, where we discussed key topics face-to-face and further strengthened our partnership. These in-person exchanges were invaluable for building trust and deepening our collaboration.
In the end, we successfully met all our challenges and achieved our goals, thanks to a partnership that was both pleasant and highly effective. Working with Invertus means having a reliable, committed partner who is passionate about delivering excellence.
We would not hesitate to recommend Invertus for future projects, and should we have any new needs, they will be our first point of contact.”

What's next
The following features are currently in development:
- Shipping tracking integration: The PayPal app will automatically notify customers about their order status (ready to ship, shipped, delivered). In the future, it may also include real-time updates on courier locations, helping merchants reduce support inquiries and improve transparency.
- Fast Lane Checkout: a faster and more streamlined checkout experience designed to minimize drop-offs. It will also include features to help merchants manage shipping-related disputes more effectively, such as clearer tracking information and automated updates that support resolution through platforms like PayPal.
